We recently committed to an 8400km round trip - where we pulled our trailer across Australia, to deliver a range of services for 'Lost in Between Festival' - in rural Western Australia over the New Year period.
Flux were engaged to deliver:
Performer management/coordination of the festival
A new years eve stage firework display
An opening ceremony involving multiple acts and duo pyrotechnics
A closing show involving 5 handheld pyrotechnic performers
This was the festivals' 3rd year of operation, and until this edition had never had fire or pyrotechnics at the festival before, due to the extreme hot, dry and windy conditions in this particular location over the summer period.
Flux were able to work closely with the DMIRS department in West Australia, along with the Department of Fire & Emergency Services to enable fire & pyrotechnics to take place for the first time for Lost in Between - through an extensive fire safety plan and fire exemption permit applications.
However due to some crowd control limitations, the handheld component of our New Years Eve show was postponed to a closing ceremony, so for this section we ran stage pyrotechnics only at midnight. The wind was strong - but with good product choices everything went smoothly.
On the final day of the festival, a freak storm with heavy wind gusts damaged key stage infrastructure, closing all of the stages of the festival. Because of this, we did not have an opportunity to deliver our large handheld pyrotechnics show act at the festival - which was upsetting. We were however, at least able to deliver some handheld pyro in the opening ceremony.
A large role on top of the above - was that it was our first time managing & coordinating the performance aspects of an entire festival, in what was our first performance coordination role outside of Flux. We were lucky to have selected an incredible group of performers, who all delivered well above their requirements in very extreme weather conditions. They were a very professional group of talented performers that all made our time in the role really enjoyable, and we'd happily work with them all again.
We had to transport dangerous goods across multiple states of Australia to this festival - and considerations had to be made with how things were stored and separated for travel.
